Steps to Become a USA Hockey Coach

Step 1: Register as a member of USA Hockey.

  • This number is renewed yearly and is needed to electronically look up your coaching profile.
  • This is due before you go on ice for both pre-skates and practices.

Step 2: Complete the background Screening

  • Every coach is asked to complete a background screening every two years.
  • This is due before you go on ice for both pre-skates and practices.

Step 3: Complete the USA Hockey SafeSport Training

  • Every coach must complete SafeSport Training annually.
  • There is an opportunity to renew with a refresh course when you are in your thirty (30) day window of expiring. USA Hockey will email a link to the training. You can also check your USA Hockey portal to see your window to complete.
  • This is due before you go on ice for both pre-skates and practices.

Step 4: Complete the Foundations of Player Development Pre-requisite.

  • This module must be completed prior to purchasing the age-specific module(s). Once completed there will be a 15-minute window before being able to purchase the age-specific module(s).
  • This is due prior to your team's first organized practice.

Step 5: Complete the online age-specific module(s) for the age level of play you are coaching.

  • Only needs to be completed once per age level.
  • This is due prior to your team's first organized practice and coaches cannot be rostered prior to completion.

Step 6: Find, Register and Attend the Required Certification Clinic.

  • Every travel team coach (Squirt/U10 and above) must have a valid Coaching Education Program (CEP) number. If you are only coaching Mites/U8, you can have an expired CEP number.
  • You can only attend one clinic per season and all coaches start at Level 1. You can take clinics from April 1 - December 31 each season.
  • This is required for you to be added onto a roster. You will need to be registered for your CEP by the end of November, and the course needs to be complete by December 31st.

Step 7: Complete the HEADS UP to Youth Sports Coaches Online Concussion Training

  • This mandatory concussion training is due every two years. If you completed the training last season, or have completed it from another sport, please submit your form on the coaches application.
  • This is due prior to your team's first organized practice.
