Mites

Perspective

As the process of separating teams draws to a close, I want to give a few thoughts on perspective and it's relation to the game of hockey, and more specifically mite hockey.  As parents, we all want what is best for our kids, but speaking from experience, what is best, is not always to BE the best, or to be on the best team.  We need to keep in mind what the long term goal of this program, and others like it are designed to do.

HAVE FUN!

I think if you asked your kids if they have had fun over the past 7 weeks, the majority of them would respond with a yes.  Keep in mind that entire time, we had no teams, we kept no score, half the time we didn't even have pucks or nets!!  Yet, those kids had a blast, and in my opinion, improved their skill set relating to the great game of hockey.

Develop a passion for the game.

In these past few weeks, you may have seen us do some activities, that don't seem to relate to hockey in any way.   Things like ringette, soccer, dodge ball, freeze tag, etc.   As much  as they seem like they don't relate to hockey, during those activities, the kids are constantly moving(skating), using both edges of their skates.  Competing; for space, pucks, rings, softballs.  Most of all they get to PLAY, which over time will develop a love and passion for the game.  I think back to when I still played the game competitively.  In juniors and college, the majority of our practice time was spent playing small area games.  If you ever get a chance to get to a college or Wild practice, you will see the same thing.  This isn't always because it makes the players better, sometimes it is just plain fun to play small little games.  Think about the little games you played as a kid in other sports, maybe it was horse in the driveway, or pepper on the baseball field, or 500 with a football.  All these things help develop of love for their respective games.

Last but not least, as teams are ready to be posted, please keep in mind the age of these kids.  Think about how much fun they have when they go to an outdoor rink, or out in the driveway all without regard to what team they are on.   At the end of the day, the level doesn't matter to the kids as much as it does to the parents, because if it weren't for the parents, the kids would have no idea of what levels meant!  This process is a tough one, and at each and every level, there will be a handful of kids who could go either way.  Please keep in mind, that no hockey player's career has ever, or will ever, be decided by the placement of one year of mite hockey.

I would like to thank each and every one of you parents for enrolling your child in hockey.  I hope that this season and each after proves to be fun, and helpful in their overall development as an athlete, and player.  Thank you, I look forward to seeing you all, at the rink!!!
